A group of marketers (loosely defined) from the old school and the new who get together to share, learn, and connect. Currently active near Washington, DC.

Middle School Marketing Manifesto

  • The fundamentals of successful marketing are rooted in authentic relationships and are not affected by technology - they are eternal.
  • Offline marketing and real-world communications will always be relevant.
  • Technology has forever changed the way real people communicate with companies and each other. Again.
  • Digital marketing strategies and tactics change almost daily, and that's okay.
  • Transparency and authenticity are fundamental. Anonymity is bad, and deception in any form is unacceptable.
  • Marketers must listen to customers and be empowered to effect change within their organization to be successful.
  • Being heard is a privilege and sharing requires permission.

Meeting Principles

  • We are open-minded marketers who understand and respect both traditional offline marketing and emerging online marketing.
  • We are a small, collaborative group where everyone’s input is expected and appreciated.
  • We discuss ideas, embrace disagreements respectfully, and challenge each other to be better. Nothing is off limits.
  • We share our knowledge regardless of who is in the room.
  • We expect to learn something new at every meeting.
  • We end every meeting on time.

The History of Middle School Marketing

The Middle School Marketing meetings began in mid-2008 after a group of marketers in the Washington, DC area had a discussion about the need for such a group. The goal was to bring together bright minds to discuss marketing related topics, be they emerging technologies and trends or long-standing best practices. With diverse experiences of participants, the knowledge sharing that’s occurred at the monthly MSM meetings has been inspiring.

Want To Get Involved?

Interested in attending?

We meet one morning each month in Falls Church, VA. We’re a welcoming bunch, but attendence does require an invitation since we keep the group small enough to foster group discussion. Want in? Email us.

Want to start your own?

People have asked about starting similar groups in other cities. We're all for it. No one "owns" the group or the concept, and we would love to discuss ways to support MSM chapters in other areas.
